Terraform a planet before colonizing

In this guide · Expansion

Terraforming changes a planet’s type before you settle a colony. It is an option for destinations whose habitability is too low for direct colonization.

In the colonization form, compare the planet’s current state with the type you can choose. Changing the type within the same planet family takes less effort than switching to another family. Terraforming adds resources and time to the expedition.

Step by step

  1. Select a planet in the colonization mission.
  2. Check its current habitability.
  3. Review the terraforming options and choose the destination type.
  4. Check the resulting habitability and updated total cost.
  5. Confirm only when you can support both the expedition and your home colony.

A nearby habitable colony can be a better first expansion than a distant planet that needs costly adaptation. Compare the summaries for both expeditions.
